Lois halfway hoped he would be gone when she returned. Ha, wishful thinking. He was still standing there, Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome smiling, devilishly. “Are you ready? We don’t have all day.” He said it with a ‘I so have you’ smile on his face although she didn’t find anything funny about this situation at all.

“So where is his office at?”

“Across town. So what did Michelle mean last night?”

  “Mean about what?”

“Don’t play with me. You know what I am talking about. What does she mean do you think he did it? Is she talking about that douche Alex?”

“I don’t know why you would think that. Just let it go. It was electrical. You heard the fire investigator say it.”

“I don’t like being lied to Lois. If he is after you, you need to tell me.”

“He isn’t after me Tom. So how long do you think this is going to take?” Irritated now.

“You’re changing the subject Lois.” His words grew harder as he forced them to remain low toned.

“Yes, I am. I love this song. Don’t you?”

“It’s ok I guess. You’re not gonna answer me are you?”

“How can you say that? She is like the best singer ever in any genre.” She purposely denied an answer yet giving him his answer at the same time.

“Easy there Miss Obsessed Fan, I wouldn’t totally disagree with you, but there are others that I think rank right there with her. There aren’t many but I could name a few.”

“I don’t think so and I’m not obsessed, I just know what I like.”

“Let me guess, I bet you voted repeatedly didn’t you?” Sarcasm noted.

“Yes, as a matter of fact I did. I happen to think that she deserved it. She is honest, and she is thankful. That is saying something. Her faith in the Lord amazes me.”

“I wouldn’t have thought you to be very religious Lois.”

“Just because I don’t talk like you think a Christian talks, or act the way a good Christian in the eyes of the world should or would, doesn’t mean that I don’t believe in the Lord. I truly believe that I am a good person, have a good heart and with everything inside me and deep in my heart, I believe that if you live to be the best person to your ability, then you’re living a good life. He has helped me a few times in the past. I owe him my life. What do you believe?”

“I believe that he gives your life, but what you do with it is on you. I don’t believe that you have to be in church to pray. I believe he hears you wherever you are. And I believe that it is your free will that can get you in or out of circumstances that lead you to him or pushes you away.”

“Yeah, me to.” Okay, now she was seriously surprised.

“Well I would love to carry on with this conversation, but I am more interested in finding out what ails you. We’re here. Come on lets go.” He was out of the car before she could say anything opening her door.

He possessed her hand the entire walk into the building. She couldn’t help but to look at their fingers entwined. She enjoyed it tremendously. As if he were telling everyone that looked their way she belonged to him. That feeling alone had a since of pride developing in her that she was able to get a man like Tom Hasting to claim her.

The seating area had a few people waiting. It was very nice. Black leather, plush seating. Not like she had ever seen in a doctor’s office before. Her experience was the hard to sit in chairs so you wind up changing from cheek to cheek almost the entire two to three hours she had to wait.

“Mr. Hasting’s hello. You must be Miss. Brown. Follow me please.” Lois definitely was confused. She didn’t have to sit and wait like the others, instead she was following the nurse back. When they stopped at the scale Lois turned and stared at Tom. “Could you please turn around?” He squinted his eyebrows together for a moment but then he smiled let out a loud breath rolling his eyes and turned.

109lbs. Damn, I knew that some of the clothes I tried on today were a little loose but I didn’t think it was because I had lost weight.

“Fill out this paperwork please. I need your ID and insurance card to copy please.”

“Here’s my ID, but I don’t have insurance.”

“Thank you.” She took her ID and left.

Before Lois even started the paperwork Dr. Jamishy was there. “Miss. Brown, Tom, it’s nice to see you both. So I would like to run some blood work and take some urine.”

“What do you think happened?” Just the sudden words of blood work and urine were already making her want to run the opposite direction.

“I don’t really know. There could be a million and one reasons to be honest Lois. Then again it could be nothing at all. We won’t know until we run these test. I would also like to do an EKG and chest xray. I just wanna make sure everything is ok with your heart and lungs.”

“My heart and lungs, do you think there is a problem?”

“No, I don’t believe so, but I would rather be safe than sorry as I said last night.”

  “Ok.”

He left the room and it wasn’t long the nurse came in and drew Lois’s blood. They set up the EKG and ran it. After walking down and giving the urine sample and getting a chest xray the nurse came back. “I think that was the last one. If you want to go and get something to eat, it’s ok. The blood work will take about an hour but the doctor would like you to come back for the results. You can take the paperwork with you if you’d like.”

“I guess it’s up to you.” Lois really didn’t care one way or the other. She was just anxious to find out what had caused it. She watched Tom waiting for his answer.

“Lunch. You need to eat. You’ve lost weight.”

  “How did you know that?”

“Because I can see it. Come on. What are you in the mood for?”

That was an understatement. She was in the mood for a lot more than food. He took her to this cute little café on the corner.

She picked up the menu and began looking through it. “So what’s good here?”

“I really don’t know. I come here for the coffee. So I figure they probably make good food to.”

Really? A question he couldn’t answer. That’s a first. I better write it down. It’s not likely to happen often. “Y’all ready to order?” The waitress in the cute little red and white play dress asked.

“Ok, I will have the patty melt please with an order of French fries, sweet tea with lemon as well please.” She took the menu from Lois’s hand turning her attention to Tom and practically slobbing on herself. Her voice was a desperate plea for just one look, one smile to satisfy her.

“And what can I get for you Mr. Hasting?” Tom kept his eyes locked with Lois as he handed the waitress the menu back.

“I think I will have the same please.”

“Sure thing, be right back with your drinks.”

“I need to be blunt, why are you doing this?” Lois felt herself grow alarmed waiting for his answer.

“Easy. I consider you to be a friend. One in which I intend on getting to know better.” Just as the realization of what his words meant became clear to Lois, his lips curled into the same devilish smile causing liquid heat to poor between her legs.

“Now, my turn. I answered your question honestly. Now you answer mine. Deal?”

“Ok.” Lois knew immediately what she was in for it.

“Who is Alex?” Lois shook her head. Of all the things he could ask her why did it have to be about him.

“I’ve answered that already. An ex who doesn’t know when to quit. That’s all.” The waitress returned placing their drinks on the table. Lois pushed the lemon in her tea and stirred it with a straw a bit.

“Now it’s my turn.” He nodded in agreement. “Why did you tell me to fight, keep my distance so to speak if you’re gonna show up all the time and demand that I give you my devoted attention?”

“Interesting. Right now, we are here because we are waiting for your test results. I would think you have my devoted attention. And becaus
e I can’t stay away from you.”

“Why? Why can’t you stay away?” She suddenly didn’t know why she asked that. There was no doubt they possessed a strong physical attraction. But she wondered if he was feeling the same connection as she.

“That’s two questions. I’ll answer both, but then it’s my turn. Because you’re sexy as hell and I want to know if you taste like you smell. Did he hurt you?”

Lois suddenly felt every ounce of heat surge to her center. Holy shit how can he say something like that and then like it was nothing go on with something else.

“Lois, you ok over there? Sure is warm in here isn’t it.” His smirk all but melted her to her seat.

“Why do you insist on asking about that nobody?” She tried to forget his comment. More than likely it wasn’t going to happen though.

  “That’s another question. Answer me.”

“Yes, he did. It’s over. I have moved on. I want to forget it and I don’t want to talk about it.”

  “Was it physical or emotional?”

“I don’t think that is a fair question and I don’t think you heard me.”

“Yes loud and clear. It may not be fair in your eyes, but it is a question. SO?”

“Both. But like I keep saying, it’s over. I don’t want to talk about it. Now my turn. Have you ever been married?”

“Hell no. Marriage isn’t something I intend on doing for a long time if ever. I like my life just as it is. My turn. Did he beat you?”

“What the hell? I told you I don’t want to talk about it.” Damn stubborn ass.

“Well I do. Answer the damn question.” His voice raised up a notch.

“No. He didn’t beat me. Are you mental?”

“No. How did he hurt you?”

“I do believe it’s my turn.”

“No, you asked me if I was mental and I answered. How did he hurt you?”

“It doesn’t matter. Please let it go.” Lois stared at him begging him to stop with this interrogation he was putting her through.

“For now. Then I get another question. Do you want me to fuck you Lois?”

Lois choked on the drink of tea she had just taken spitting it at him. “I’m sorry, here let me, take a napkin. I’m so sorry.” Lois just wanted to again crawl up under a rock and never show her face again.

  “It’s ok. Now answer me.”

“No, I do not want to fuck you.” Liar. She wanted to fuck him. She wanted him take her places she had never gone before and when she touched down she wanted him take her back up again.

He stared at her only briefly before responding. “Lois, honestly. You can’t hide it. I know you do.”

“So what, I want to have a good time. There is no crime in it. Why do you push questions at me that you know make me uncomfortable?”

“Life isn’t comfortable Lois, but I need to know where we stand.”

“I thought we were just friends. Isn’t that what you said?”

“I did say that. I do mean that. It doesn’t mean that I can’t fuck my friend. Show me somewhere that is forbidden.”

  “I can’t. You told me…”

“I know what I told you Lois. I just want honest answers to my questions right now, got it.”

“You are so bossy sometimes. If I wanted to know something I wouldn’t be demanding an answer.”

“Fair enough. If you would answer my questions I wouldn’t have to demand it. Next question is on you.”

“Do you like Patty Melts?” He looked at her like she just totally blew his mind with that one. Way off the subject at hand.

  “Yes, why?”

“Because here’s your food. Eat.” She returned to him the same devilish smile he kept giving her. Point to her, she celebrated the score in her head. The waitress sat the food down in front of them and they ate. She managed to eat ¾ of her sandwich and he ate all of his. He paid for the meal, lay a ten down on the table and they headed back to the doctor’s office. Again they took them right back.

“It will be just a few minutes. Let me make sure he has all the results.”

“Thank You.” She played with her fingers and waited impatiently on Dr. Jamishy to come.

“I don’t suppose I could get you to wait outside?” Lois smiled at him hoping he would but knowing he wouldn’t.

“Not a chance. Do smile at me like that again. I like it. It does things to my imagination.”

“Your imagination. Okay, if you say so Tom.”

Dr. Jamishy came in just in time. “Ok, so I have looked at all your results. It’s as I suspected. Everything looks good. Have you been getting plenty of rest?”

“Well, some nights more than others.”

“I will take that as a no. You’re exhausted. You need to rest. If you don’t get adequate rest Lois, your body will pay for it. It will eventually shut down and you pass out. So, are you sleeping at night?”

  “Some nights.”

“Why don’t you sleep?” Lois really didn’t want to talk about it in front of Tom but at this point she didn’t feel she had a choice in the matter but she wouldn’t volunteer information.

“I have nightmares. They keep me up sometimes.”

  “What kind of nightmares?”

“It doesn’t matter really. I’m fine. I’ll do better. Promise.” She held up her fingers to gesture girl scouts honor.

“I do believe the good doctor asked you what kind of nightmares.” His voice was grim.

  “Just nightmares, dreams. That’s all.”

“She’s right. Dreams are just dreams Tom. I can give you something to help if you want?”

“She wants?” Lois turned to look at him to protest but the ‘don’t you dare do it’ look on his face was all she needed to willing comply.

“Ok then. I’ll write for Lunesta 2mg… Make sure you only take this at night. Don’t drive anywhere after you have taken it. Take it about 45 minutes before you go to bed. If you have any more problems call me.” Lois reached out and shook his hand relieved there was nothing wrong with her. Not serious anyways.

“Go out to the car, I’ll be right there.”

“You get to come into my appointment with me, but I have to go to the car when it’s your turn. Fair again.” Lois turned and walked out not waiting for his counter. It wasn’t long and he joining her.

“So are you going to make it? Come on what’s the verdict?”

“I didn’t have an appointment Lois.”

  “Then what were you doing?”

“It doesn’t matter. Let’s get you home so you can rest.”

“I have things to do Tom. I just can’t lay in bed.”

“Yes you can. You can either lay there, or I can make you. What’s the choice?”

I call your bluff buddy. “You’re gonna have to make me.” Lois smiled jokingly.

He reached in his pocket and pulled out his cell phone with his facial expression never changing. “Mark, I won’t be back for the rest of the day. Call me on my cell if you need me.” He ended the call just like that.

“I was just joking. I don’t need you to make me.”

“Too late for that. I was serious.”

Oh shit, what did I just get myself into. He stopped at the pharmacy and Lois almost made it out of the car before he ordered her to stay put. He went in and within a few minutes he returned with her medication. He sat it next to him and drove.

“Why do you look so damn serious?”

“I am trying to figure out exactly how I want to make you. I could tie you down. Cuff you down. But I really wanna hold you down with my hands. Do I need to say more?”

“You’re not serious are you? I mean. I am a grown ass woman. I don’t need anyone to hold me down while I sleep.”

“We both know we won’t be sleeping Lois. That is the problem with my favorite choice. And it is why I will tie you down if you so much as try to get out of bed. Understand? No joke, No bluff!”

“Yes.” Lois wanted to argue for t
he last choice but she knew he was right. She couldn’t exactly go without sleep. She reached in the bag and took out a pill. “Bottom’s up then.” Lois tossed it in her mouth and swallowed.

“Lois he told you to take it at night.”

“You said I was going to bed. Just making sure I don’t attempt to get out of the bed.”

When they arrived back to the room, Michelle wasn’t there. On a piece of paper Lois read. Lois,

Stepped out for a bit. Have a good day would ya. If you need me call my cell. If I don’t answer I’ll call you back hope I don’t answer you because I am getting lay, otherwise I am probably well, I will call you back.

  You’re Bestie

  Michelle

Lois went to the little kitchen and grabbed a bottled water. “Do you want anything?”

“No, just you in that bed.” He pointed toward her room like she was getting grounded or something.

“I’m not a child Tom. I’ll go to bed when I feel like it. You don’t own me.”

“I don’t want to own your mind, but don’t question your body. But I do want you to sleep, you did take the medication, so now go to bed.”

“No. I’ll go when I am damn good and ready. Now you can stay here if you want, or you can leave. Either way I will do what I want when I want.”

“No that’s not exactly how that’s gonna happen. Don’t make me force you?”

“You can’t, nor do I believe you would, because right now I am exhausted as the good doctor you took me to see said. I would only fight it tooth and nail and you don’t want me to waste what energy I have do ya?”

“Lois, ok. Let’s go back to my place. You can sleep there. I can get some work done. It would be beneficial to both of us.”

“Not a chance. If you need to get work done, then by all means, go.”

“Why do you have to be so damn contrary to everything I say woman.”

“Because you haven’t one time asked me to do anything. You only bark orders. Have you ever thought about asking me?” He growled, knowing she was right the minute she said it. He paced the floor rubbing his hand through his hair. Lois was quite amused.

Lois Brown silenced the great Tom Hasting, quick call Ripley’s.
